Boat arriving at JW Marriott Venice's private dock on Isola delle Rose

Is JW Marriott Venice Actually Worth It for Families? Read the Real Cost

Europe • Hotels • Italy

The engine drops to an idle as the boat rounds into a quiet cove, the JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa‘s private dock straight ahead. Olive trees lean in over the canal, the resort’s low white buildings tucked into the leaves. Someone already has our bags before we’ve climbed out of the boat. It felt like the opening scene of a Bond movie, and we hadn’t even stepped onto the dock yet.

We’d hired that boat ourselves instead of waiting on the hotel’s free shuttle, because we wanted the experience. The Junior Suite we originally booked would have been the unglamorous option. But the La Maisonette Loft we were given? Well, that added to our story of being in a luxurious Bond movie throughout our stay. Watch the walk-through here.

This post breaks down the real cost of that upgrade. Spoiler: the suite we slept in lists for more than four times what we paid for the whole stay. Everything else, from what we booked to what our status and Amex got us, is at the end of the post.

What’s in this post

JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa: Life on a Private Island

JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa sits on Isola delle Rose, a 40-acre private island in the lagoon, a 20-minute boat ride from St. Mark’s Square. A complimentary shuttle runs the route all day; we paid for a private wooden boat (with a short Venice waterway tour) instead. Either way, you have to arrive by water. No other route exists, and that’s the entire point of staying here. If you fly into Venice Marco Polo, book a private transfer into the city ahead of time instead of sorting it out after a long flight.

Olive groves, gardens, and tranquility line the island. Four restaurants, a spa billed as the largest in Venice, and pools scattered across the property. You could stay a week and never leave. That’s also the tradeoff. It takes 20 minutes each way by boat to reach Venice, so a spontaneous evening stroll through the Rialto isn’t something you can do from here. Read the hotel’s official page before booking. This is a resort stay with a side of Venice, designed for people and families who want a base to escape Venice’s heat and crowds.

The Upgrade: How Ambassador Status and Amex Stacked

We booked a Junior Suite, the cheapest room (at the time of booking) that slept 4 in the resort’s main building. Two separate systems worked in our favor before we ever checked in: Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite status, and booking through Amex Travel’s Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) program.

Ambassador Elite members get a complimentary upgrade to the best available room, suites included, for the entire stay. The upgrade depends on what’s open at check-in and throughout the duration of the stay. Amex Travel’s Fine Hotels & Resorts program has its own separate promises: a room upgrade on arrival when space allows, plus a guaranteed 4pm checkout. Breakfast for two and a $100 food and beverage credit too.

Two upgrade paths pointed at the same reservation. Neither one guarantees anything. Both depend on what’s available during your stay.

What was available? La Maisonette Loft. The full cost-versus-what-we-got math is at the end of this post. That section covers what a comparable stay runs today, and what part of this is repeatable without status.

Does JW Marriott Venice Have Rooms That Sleep Four?

The question every family with young kids asks before booking any hotel: does this hotel have rooms that sleep four? The answer here is “yes.” The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa has several rooms that fit a family of four without booking two, including the Junior Suite we booked, the La Maisonette Loft we stayed in, and a few family room options. And if you’re traveling with a crowd, there’s also a 2-bedroom villa on property that sleeps 7.

La Maisonette Loft: A Spacious Room for Four

The La Maisonette Loft has a king bed that sits on the upper level loft, a sofa bed on the lower level, with a private terrace attached. Plenty of space and perfect for a family of 4.

You walk through a gate at the front of the garden, straight toward the room’s glass facade. Glass doors open into the living room, with the sofa bed, desk, TV, powder room, and storage area.

A short run of stairs leads up to the loft, open to the level below behind a glass railing. Floor-to-ceiling windows carry the same garden and terrace view up to the bed. The room never feels closed off from outside, even one level up. In the loft is another storage area, a single chair, a desk with a TV, and a king-size bed.

On the other side of the headboard wall sits the main bathroom. The bathroom includes a separate large soaking tub, a walk-in shower, a single-sink vanity, and a separate toilet room.

What This Meant for Us

The boys took the sofa bed downstairs. We had the loft level to ourselves after bedtime, glass railing and all. That vertical separation did more for a normal bedtime routine than a second hotel room would have. No adjoining door, no hallway, only a flight of stairs. We didn’t request this room category, but it’s what I’d book next time for our family (and hope for the La Maisonette Pool Loft upgrade).

Breakfast Made to Order at Dopolavoro Venezia

Guests in the JW Retreats side of the property, which includes La Maisonette Loft, eat breakfast at the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Dopolavoro Venezia, instead of the hotel’s main breakfast restaurant. Breakfast is made to order instead of a buffet. Eggs any style, fresh-pressed juice, and pastries pulled from the oven while you wait.

Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) guarantees breakfast for two, but this room category comes with breakfast for everyone in the room. Double-check at booking that yours includes breakfast, and don’t assume the rules won’t change.

Pools, a Cabana, and a Kids’ Club

The property has two pools included with your stay: the main pool on the back of the hotel grounds, and an adults-only pool on the rooftop of the main building. The spa has a third, indoor-outdoor pool for guests 16 and older, but it costs extra (the hotel lists it as an extra fee). If you’re willing to splurge, a few suites, like the La Maisonette Pool Loft, come with their own private plunge pool.

For adults, there’s a spa, fitness center, padel courts, and more to keep you entertained. For littles, there’s a kids’ club to keep your minis entertained (and for adults looking for a break from their offspring).

We rented a cabana by the pool for the afternoon, €216, food included. After a long breakfast, it felt like most of the day: play and food without having to think.

Planning pool time? Pack a waterproof phone holder to keep your phone dry around the water. It’s one of the 12 unexpected things we pack on every trip.

Why We Ate Pizza Both Nights

The resort has several restaurants and 24-hour room service. Dinner both nights, though, was pizza at Pizzeria Cucina, in the main building, where wood-fired ovens run each evening. Casual, order-anything pizza. Perfect after a day of sightseeing with kids who are done eating something new.

Late July in Venice: Why the Island Mattered

Venice in July and August is hot and crowded. The heat turns a walk to St. Mark’s Square into a slog by midmorning, and tour groups fill every bridge and alley in between. A private island base changed the shape of those days: mornings on the island, a boat into the city once the worst of the crowds thinned, back before dinner.

I don’t love Venice. We’ve been a few times now, and our other visits all fell in the off-season, late fall or early spring. But visiting in peak summer months only felt bearable because we had an easy place to escape the crowds and the heat. We did Venice-proper after the morning crowds, when most people were at lunch. For this trip, the island was the vacation itself, and the city was a side trip, not the main event.

The Shuttle Dock Standoff

Heading back from Venice, we raced through the alleys to catch the next shuttle. (Adding another Bond moment to our stay.) The shortcut we took along the waterfront dead-ended. We cut through a narrow passage behind a hotel kitchen and reached the dock as the crew member got ready to untie the boat. He looked at me and said, “No.” I picked up one of the boys and said, “I’ll throw him on.” He gave me a stern look. “I’ll do it,” I said. He tied the boat back up and took my son on board. That standoff gave the hubs and our other son enough time to round the corner. We rode back to the island instead of losing another 20 minutes in Venice (eating more gelato than anyone needed).

Is JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa Worth It for Families?

This isn’t a cheap hotel, but any vacation to Europe during school holidays is usually not a “budget” trip either. Costs aside, yes, this hotel is an excellent option for families.

But if cost is a concern, this hotel is more attainable if you, or a travel companion, hold Marriott elite status (Platinum and above) and/or have access to Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR). As a Marriott Elite (Platinum or above), you can select breakfast as your “welcome gift.” And if you book with Amex’s FHR benefit, you get breakfast plus a $100 food and beverage credit. During our stay we were able to use our credit on food, which reduced our out-of-pocket expenses. But let’s be real, we weren’t staying at a cheap hotel, so this wasn’t exactly a big money-saver. The bigger saving came from paying with Amex points, which covered more than two-thirds of our bill.

Both status and booking through Amex’s FHR give you an opportunity for a free upgrade, but it’s never guaranteed.

Without status or an FHR-eligible card, the question is whether a genuine family suite is worth the rack rate. La Maisonette Loft prices around €1,172 a night. A Junior Suite alone, without the extra space to spread out, runs about €813. If this is a price you’re willing to pay, the resort itself is wonderful and a lovely escape from the crowds, but still within easy access of Venice.

The Bottom Line: What We Booked vs. What We Got

Booked: A Junior Suite for two nights (July 31 to August 2, 2022) through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts.

Paid: $568.91 out of pocket for the whole stay. Amex Membership Rewards points covered the rest.

Got: La Maisonette Loft, breakfast for all four of us, a $100 food and beverage credit, a guaranteed 4pm checkout, and Marriott Bonvoy points on the stay.

What We Paid

The Junior Suite priced at $1,832.38 for two nights: $1,665.80 for the room plus $166.58 in taxes and fees. We didn’t pay that in cash. Amex lets you pay for a Fine Hotels & Resorts booking with Membership Rewards points at 1 cent per point. Our 126,347 points, earned through regular spending on our Amex cards, covered $1,263.47 of the bill. We paid the last $568.91, and that part earned Membership Rewards points too.

What We Paid (2 nights, July 31 to August 2, 2022)

What we paidAmount
Junior Suite, 2 nights (room $1,665.80 + $166.58 taxes and fees)$1,832.38
Paid with Amex Membership Rewards points (126,347 points at 1 cent each)-$1,263.47
Cash out of our pocket$568.91

What We Got

We never slept in the Junior Suite. Ambassador Elite status and the FHR booking put us in La Maisonette Loft, which lists at about €1,172 a night today. That’s about €2,344 (about $2,658) for the two nights we stayed.

Today’s rate works as a yardstick because prices here have held steady. The Junior Suite runs about €813 a night now, close to its 2022 price after exchange rates.

Side by side, the numbers look like this: a suite that lists for more than four times the cash we paid. Breakfast for four both mornings and a $100 credit (ours went to food) came on top.

What We Got for Two Nights

The upgrade isn’t repeatable on demand. It depended on Ambassador Elite status and on which rooms sat empty the day we checked in.

The rest is. Book a Fine Hotels & Resorts property through Amex Travel, status or not, and you get the $100 credit, the guaranteed 4pm checkout, and breakfast for two. You also get a shot at an upgrade if one opens up. Pay with Membership Rewards points and each one covers a cent of the bill. That part, anyone with the right card can do.

That wooden boat is still the first thing I picture from this trip, engine idling, Venice shrinking behind us. It felt like a Bond movie before we ever reached the dock. What waited on the other side turned out to be the real story. Two nights in a suite that lists at about €2,344, for a total cash bill of $568.91. Book the Junior Suite. Let Ambassador status and Amex do the rest of the work, if you have both lined up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a family of four stay in one room at JW Marriott Venice?

Yes, several rooms sleep four, including the Junior Suite and La Maisonette Loft. Not every bigger room sleeps four, so confirm the occupancy for the category you choose before you book. Bigger groups can look at the 2-bedroom villa, which sleeps 7.

Is there a free shuttle from JW Marriott Venice to St. Mark’s Square?

Yes. A complimentary shuttle boat runs between the island and St. Mark’s Square all day, and the ride takes about 20 minutes. Check the timetable before you head into the city, because missing a boat can cost you 20 minutes on the dock. Coming from Marco Polo airport, book a transfer into the city first.

Which pools can kids use at JW Marriott Venice?

Kids can swim in the main pool on the back of the grounds. The rooftop pool is adults-only, and the spa’s indoor-outdoor pool is for guests 16 and older and costs extra. The resort also runs a kids’ club.

How much does JW Marriott Venice cost?

A Junior Suite ran about €813 a night when we checked rates in September 2026, and La Maisonette Loft, the bi-level suite we stayed in, ran about €1,172. Add taxes, and expect incidentals like food and a cabana to add several hundred euros more across a short stay.

Can you use Amex points at JW Marriott Venice?

Yes, if you book through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, a benefit of certain American Express cards. Membership Rewards points pay for the booking at 1 cent each: we put 126,347 points toward our two nights and paid $568.91 in cash. FHR also adds a room upgrade on arrival when available, a guaranteed 4pm checkout, breakfast for two, and a $100 food and beverage credit. You earn Marriott Bonvoy points on the stay, plus Membership Rewards points on whatever you charge to the card instead of paying with points.
