Two hours into a Wales castles road trip, the sheep stopped us cold.
A dozen of them, spread across the road like they owned it. I got out, waved my arms, clapped. I even tried yelling. Nothing. One of them blinked, I think.
This post covers every pound we spent on a 2011 North Wales trip: two adults, two days, two UNESCO-listed Wales castles, one Michelin-starred dinner, one night near Snowdonia. And what those same things cost in 2026. Some numbers are reassuring. One will genuinely surprise you.

The Bottom Line: What We Spent on Wales Castles and Beyond
Total spent: £363 for 2 people. October 2011. That covered two adults driving from within the UK, two full days, two UNESCO-listed Wales castles, one castle hotel visit, a pub lunch, a seven-course Michelin-starred tasting menu with overnight stay at Tyddyn Llan, and coffee on the M6 heading home. Nothing was skipped to make that number work. It was a genuinely good trip at a genuinely reasonable cost.

What that did not include: accommodation in a separate hotel before Tyddyn Llan (we drove up and straight to Bodelwyddan), meals beyond the ones listed, or any shopping. It was a focused trip: castles, dinner, drive home.
The Wales Castles: Where the Budget Costs Went
The first stop was Bodelwyddan Castle, right off the A55 on the way into North Wales. In 2011 it operated as a historic home and museum. We paid £12 for two to tour the house and grounds. Today it operates as a Warner Hotel. There is no day entry. The Gothic Revival exterior is might be worth slowing down for as you pass on the A55 if you’re there for the castles, but the paid tour is gone.
Then Caernarfon Castle. In 2011 we paid £10.50 for two people, £5.25 each. Full access: every tower, every wall, every spiral staircase that went somewhere unexpected. We spent over three hours there and still did not see everything. Peak season in 2026, that same ticket costs £15.20 per adult. For two adults at peak season: £30.40. That is a 190% increase on the 2011 per-person price.
It is still worth it. We keep going back. But it is the single biggest budget shift in planning a Wales castles trip today.

Lunch and motorway coffee costs are honest estimates. We kept no receipts for those. Everything else is confirmed from the original booking email and travel journal. The 2026 figures use current published prices where available, and honest estimates where they were not.
Where We Stayed: Tyddyn Llan and the Good News
Tyddyn Llan held a Michelin star when we visited in October 2011 under owners Bryan and Susan Webb. We paid £310 for two: room, an extended tasting menu that ran to seven courses, and breakfast the next morning. In 2026, the base package starts at £370 for two (Cosy room, six-course dinner, breakfast). That is a 19% increase over 14 years, well below the rate of UK inflation over the same period.
In a post where one line item went up 190%, a 19% increase on the nicest thing we did feels like good news. It is. North Wales accommodation and dining have held their value in a way the castle entry fees have not. Budget accordingly: put the money in the overnight stay, not in the castle tickets.
The dinner itself deserves its own paragraph. Course six arrived as half a grouse, shared between two people. This was after a scallop starter, a fish course, two other meat courses, and an amuse-bouche. We took one bite each to say we had tried it. We were completely full by course three. We still talk about those scallops 14 years later.

We stayed in 2011 under the original owners Bryan and Susan Webb. The restaurant has since changed hands. Recent reviews from 2025 are positive and the new team appears to have found its footing. Check current reviews before booking as always with a restaurant of this calibre. The setting and the accommodation remain exceptional.
Food and Drink: The Grouse, the Pub Chili, and the M6 Starbucks
Lunch was at the Strafford House on Anglesey. We ordered the chili. The menu called it “Chili con Carne.” It was more like “carne con chili.” The plate arrived as what I can only describe as a large quantity of meat with a chili-related afterthought. It was warm and filling and cost about £22 for two, and that is exactly what it was for. Fuel. No regrets. No recommendation either.
The Starbucks on the M6 heading home was approximately £7 for two coffees in 2011. It is approximately £11 now. It has always been and will always be a motorway price for a motorway coffee. The point is that you stop, because you need caffeine to survive the drive.
One general note on Welsh food: portions are not small, and the cuisine leans heavily toward meat. The pub chili was mostly meat. The Michelin-starred tasting menu sent out half a grouse for two people as course six, after four other meat courses. If you are not a meat eater, check menus ahead of time. North Wales is not London for dietary variety, at least not outside the main towns.
The free food advice: the long-name station photo stop on Anglesey costs nothing. The layby views over Snowdonia cost nothing. Pack lunch and sandwiches for one of the two days and the food budget drops significantly without affecting the trip at all.
Then vs. Now: 2011 vs. 2026 Wales Castle Prices
Not all prices in North Wales have risen equally. Some have tracked inflation. One has dramatically outpaced it. One has barely moved in 14 years.

The pattern is clear. Castle entry has outpaced inflation by a significant margin. Everything else has been more reasonable. If you are building a 2026 budget for a North Wales trip, the castle tickets are where to plan for the biggest change from any previous experience or older guide you might have read.
The CADW Explorer Pass: Is It Worth It for Wales Castles?
The CADW Explorer Pass covers entry to 130+ Welsh historic sites managed by CADW, the Welsh Government’s heritage organisation. For anyone doing more than two Wales castles on the same trip, it is worth running the numbers before you book individual tickets.

For a focused 48-hour trip to Caernarfon and Conwy, the pass barely breaks even. If you are doing three or more CADW sites, or if you have kids and qualify for a family ticket, the pass makes clear financial sense. For a longer itinerary covering all four UNESCO Wales castles, it saves a significant amount.

Now that you know where the costs have gone, here is how to plan around them. The right version of this trip depends on how much time you have, not just how much money.

The day trip version works well if you are already in the region or driving between London and Scotland and want a meaningful stop. The 48-hour version is the sweet spot for most travellers: enough time to do both Caernarfon and Conwy properly without rushing. The upper mid-range version is what we did in 2011 and what we would do again.

Caernarfon Castle. Yes, £15.20 is significantly more than the £5.25 we paid in 2011. It is 100% worth it! We keep going back. But it is the single biggest budget shift in planning a Wales castles trip today. There is no equivalent. You cannot substitute a different castle and get the same experience. The scale of Caernarfon: the walls, the towers, the views over the Menai Strait toward Anglesey: is unlike anything else on the route. Pay the entry fee. Arrive at opening time. Give it three hours.
One good dinner. We had lunch at a random pub on Anglesey and it was fine. We had dinner at Tyddyn Llan and still remember the scallops 14 years later. By the time course six arrived: half a grouse, shared between two people, after four other meat courses: we were completely full and slightly overwhelmed. We took one bite each just to say we had. One well-chosen dinner matters more than three average ones.Choose it deliberately.
Where to Save
Lunch. Pack it or eat cheap. The Strafford House chili did exactly what it needed to do: warm us up on a cold October afternoon: but it was not a meal worth spending money on. Wales rewards the picnic layby more than the sit-down pub lunch on a tight budget.
Motorway coffee. It has always been expensive. It will always be expensive. Buy good coffee before you leave and bring a flask.
The free stuff is genuinely good. Walking Conwy’s medieval town walls is free. The long-name station photo stop on Anglesey is free. The Snowdonia scenery from a layby off the A55 is free. Wales rewards the slow stop more than the scheduled attraction.

But what you get for the money: UNESCO-listed Wales castles with almost no crowds, Snowdonia on the horizon, and a breakfast worth writing in your journal in capital letters. In 2026, plan for £250–300 per couple for a budget overnight, or £500–560 for the full experience we had in 2011. Either version beats standing in a queue at the Tower of London.
£15.20 per adult at peak season in 2026. Off-peak pricing is slightly lower. Family tickets are available. Book through CADW at cadw.gov.wales to guarantee entry and skip the queue. In 2011 we paid £5.25 per person: so the increase is significant, but the castle itself remains one of the best-value heritage sites in Britain for what you get.
It depends on how many sites you are visiting. For Caernarfon only, no. For Caernarfon plus Conwy plus Beaumaris: three sites, two adults at peak: you save approximately £25–35 over individual tickets. For all four UNESCO Wales castles the saving is closer to £55–65. The setting and accommodation remain exceptional. The restaurant has changed hands since we visited: the original owners who held the Michelin star have moved on, and recent reviews of the food are mixed. Check current reviews before booking specifically for the restaurant. If you are going for the setting, the room, the Snowdonia location, and breakfast: yes. If you are going purely for the tasting menu, do more research first.
